Chosen Song I have chosen to use the song “Mile End” by Pulp. I have chosen to use this song for my music video as I believe it will be a challenge to create a music video that has a message about poverty, that also fits with the style of the song. The song has a very energetic feel, yet the lyrics are about a horrible situation that no one wants to be in. The original song also does not have a music video for it, so I believe it gives me more creative freedom to interpret it however I want. The song was originally released as part of the soundtrack for the film “Trainspotting” which has very dark messages in it. This shows that it can be used in a darker video, even with the light-hearted beat.

Analysis of 3 Protest Song Videos Run The Jewels – Close Your Eyes (And Count to F**k) - The sound of a train passing very loudly at the start suggests that the neighbourhood they are in is not very nice as the train at the middle of the night would cause the prices of the houses to be reduced. This could highlight the fact that black people are not treated fairly in terms of jobs, therefore making less money and causing them to live in a house that is not very nice. - Uses a monochrome filter which connotes old (due to old cameras only being able to film in black and white. This could suggest that police brutality is a problem that has been ongoing for a long time. - The policeman spitting juxtaposes the usual view of a policeman. Spitting is seen as disrespectful and having a policeman do it suggests that the p...

Protest Song Genre The earliest example of a protest song could be Joseph Warren’s “Free America”. The song goes as far back as 1774, which is two years before the United States was founded. The song was sung famously by American soldiers. The song was used to draw out courage from the American troops. Another protest song that was among the earliest was “Yankee Doodle”. Although it is a popular song in America now, the song was first sung by British troops, mocking the Americans. The first modern protest song is the song “Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday, released in 1936 as a protest against racism in America. This song has been claimed to make protest songs ‘an art’. Following this, in the 1960s, a very well-known protest song comes out. The song by Sam Cooke, “A Chang is Gonna Come”, reflected what life was like living as an African American man. He wrote the song after being turned away from a ‘whites-only’ motel. The song has been covered many times since and has even bee...
