Music Video Reflection

What have you learned?
While filming my music video, I have learned that it is better to shoot too much than not enough. I also learned that I need to focus on my mise-en-scene a lot more and not just focus on the main item in the shot.

If you encountered problems, what were they and how could you avoid this next time?
I didn't have enough actors in my music video to create the narrative that I wanted. I was trying to get my parents to be in it but they didn't want to. I could fix this by planning to film on a day that others can do so that I can have more characters to make it. Another problem was that I didn't have enough shots, so while editing I had to use a copy of one shot as a 'filler'. I can fix this next time by using a story board with all the shots planned out with many different types of shots. I was planning to have another shot of me lip-syncing but when I filmed the shot, I didn't like the look of the shot so I scrapped it.

When editing this shot, I could have made them come up quicker as, when watching it, I realised that it is a bit boring and too slow for the song. it should have been twice the speed and this shot should happen every other shot rather than 3 shots in a row.

How could you improve?
If I spent more time filming and filmed with someone willing to be in the video that could have improved it as I was acting in it as well as directing it, which was difficult to do and less efficient than having someone else film it. I had to constantly watch the shot back as I didn't see it being filmed. I also could have focused on my mise-en-scene, specifically with the colours and items in the background.

  1. You have demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues with your video and how you can prevent them next time. Is there anything else you learned during this project? Why is it so important to consider the mise-en-scene of a shot? Try to elaborate on this and how your decisions as a director impact the audience's reading of the media text.
